Will Team USA continue the Presidents Cup win trend?
The 2026 Presidents Cup will be held at the famed Medinah Country Club September 22-27. The Presidents Cup began in 1994, with a competition held at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Prince William County, Virginia, USA. Through the 25-plus-year journey, the world's best players have come together to compete for team, country and the honor of raising the Presidents Cup trophy. In 2024, the U.S. Team claimed its 10th straight Presidents Cup Sunday at Royal Montreal. The Americans took an 11-7 lead into Sunday, where each of the 12 players on both teams played Singles. Xander Schauffele scored the first point of the day for the U.S. Team with a 4-and-3 win over Jason Day. Keegan Bradley clinched the winning point for the U.S. with a 1-up victory on the 18th hole over Si Woo Kim.
Team captains for the 2026 Presidents Cup are Brandt Snedeker (Team USA) and Geoff Ogilvy (International Team). The U.S. Team will be comprised of six (6) automatic qualifiers and six (6) Captain’s Picks, with the ranking determined through a weighted system based on FedEx Cup Points from January 1, 2025, through August 23, 2026. The six automatic qualifiers will be determined following the 2026 BMW Championship. The International Team will be comprised of six (6) automatic qualifiers and (6) Captain’s Picks, with the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) used to determine the former. The automatic qualifiers will be determined following the TOUR Championship.
In my opinion, the U.S. Team will continue the win trend in the Presidents Cup and here is why. The quality and strength of the International Team is not as good as the U.S. Team statistically this year. Statistics are not everything in match play due to the volatile environment which influences players’ decisions in shot making although they can have an impact. There are several factors that influence wins and momentum in match play. The most important are greens in regulation proximity, scrambling percentage and birdies.
Greens in regulation proximity is a thermometer for the moment. If a player hits it close, the opponent may take on a hole location they normally wouldn’t, especially in the singles matches. Scrambling percentage is a good indicator of a player being able to tie a hole when they have missed the green and diminish any momentum the opposing player may be able to create by winning a hole with a par. Birdies… nothing matches a hot putter in match play.
The U.S. players lead many of those categories when matched against the International players head-to-head. Team pairings for the fourball, foursomes, and head-to-head on Sunday will be well thought out from both teams. Strategy, personality, and player statistics will certainly influence pairings and the Sunday line up. I am looking forward to watching a dynamic match play event at the historic Medinah Country Club.
